STEAM Punk Kids (SPK) targeted-lesson development used 2017 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) statewide results to determine areas of focus. The SPK team analyzed student performance results from the 5th grade math and science exams and identified the lowest scoring questions. The team gained valuable insight into themes and approaches for targeted lessons based on the type of material tested and format of STAAR questions.
Texas Curriculum Standards
The SPK targeted lessons are based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) associated with the STAAR performance results. Readiness TEKS were prioritized over supporting TEKS given the larger number of STAAR questions that arise from the readiness skills. Additionally, our team prioritized the 5th grade readiness skills that scaffold to readiness TEKS in the lower grades.
